Osian or Sam Dunes: Which Desert Safari Is Right for Your Trip?

By Tanmay Khichi

Short answer: choose Osian if you are in Jodhpur and want a few hours of dunes, old temples and village visits. Choose Sam Sand Dunes if you want to sleep in a desert camp near Jaisalmer. Both are real Thar Desert experiences, but they are different kinds of trip, and the right one depends mostly on how much time you have and where you are staying.

Osian: the day-trip option from Jodhpur

Osian is a small town roughly 65 km north of Jodhpur, about an hour or so by road depending on traffic and road conditions. It is known for a group of temples, Hindu and Jain, that are over a thousand years old, and for sand dunes just outside town where camel rides are offered, usually timed for the late afternoon light.

Because it is close to Jodhpur, Osian works well as a half-day or full-day plan without changing hotels. Many day trips combine it with a visit to Bishnoi villages on the way; you can read how that combination works on our page about the desert and village safari from Jodhpur.

Sam Sand Dunes: the overnight desert-camp option

Sam Sand Dunes are roughly 40 km west of Jaisalmer, which is itself around 280 km from Jodhpur, a drive of four to five hours. Desert camps in this area typically offer an evening on the dunes, a camel or jeep safari, an evening programme and a night in a camp. Because of the distance, most people reach it as part of a Jodhpur to Jaisalmer route rather than as a day trip.

Our Desert Safari Tour follows that pattern: a night in Jodhpur, a night in Jaisalmer and a night in a desert camp near Sam Dunes.

How to choose

  • One spare day in Jodhpur and you want dunes: Osian, as a half-day or full-day trip.
  • You want to sleep in a camp and see the desert at night: Sam Dunes, on a Jodhpur to Jaisalmer route.
  • Travelling with young children or older relatives: Osian involves less time in a vehicle and no overnight stay.
  • Interested in village life and wildlife as well as dunes: add the Bishnoi villages near Jodhpur to an Osian day.

When to go

The cooler months from October to March are the most comfortable for both options, while summer afternoons in the desert can be very hot. Our guide to the best time to visit Rajasthan covers the seasons in more detail.

What to bring

  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat or scarf, and closed shoes for walking on sand.
  • A warm layer: desert nights can be cold in winter even when days are pleasant.
  • Cash for small purchases and tips, and a power bank for photos.

Questions

Quick answers

Osian is about 65 km north of Jodhpur, roughly an hour or so by road depending on traffic and road conditions.

Yes. A common plan is a day trip to Osian with a camel ride near sunset, sometimes combined with Bishnoi village visits. For a night in the dunes you would normally continue towards Jaisalmer.

If a night in the desert is the point of your trip, yes. If you only want a few hours on the dunes, Osian is more practical from Jodhpur.
