Overview

Andaman & Nicobar Islands, in brief

The Andaman Islands sit closer to Thailand than to mainland India, and it shows in the water — some of India’s clearest seas and best-preserved coral reefs, alongside a British colonial history centred on the Cellular Jail, once used to imprison independence-movement freedom fighters.

Port Blair and Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep) anchor our current hub, covering the territory’s administrative capital and its best-regarded beach island.

  • Radhanagar Beach, Havelock Island — regularly ranked among Asia’s best beaches
  • Scuba diving and snorkelling on genuinely healthy coral reefs
  • The Cellular Jail’s sound-and-light history show, Port Blair
  • Island-hopping ferries between Port Blair and Havelock

When to go

Best time to visit

October to May for calm seas and good diving visibility. The monsoon (June-September) brings rough seas that can disrupt ferry schedules and reduce diving visibility.

Practical

Travel tips

Inter-island travel is by ferry (government or private) and schedules can be weather-dependent — build a buffer day into your itinerary if you have a fixed onward flight. Foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit (issued on arrival for most nationalities); Indian citizens need only standard ID.

Eating

Food guide

Fresh seafood dominates — grilled fish, prawns and crab curries are the highlight, often with a Bengali or South Indian coastal influence given the islands’ mixed settler history.

Questions

Andaman & Nicobar Islands: common questions

Indian citizens need only standard photo ID. Foreign nationals require a Restricted Area Permit, generally issued free on arrival at Port Blair airport for most nationalities.
