Overview

Meghalaya, in brief

Meghalaya means "abode of the clouds," and the name fits: this is one of the wettest places on Earth, a Khasi and Jaintia hills state defined by waterfalls, limestone caves, and a genuinely unique piece of living architecture — root bridges grown, not built, from the roots of rubber fig trees over generations.

Shillong and Cherrapunji anchor our current Meghalaya hub, covering the state capital and its most dramatic waterfall-and-cave country.

  • Shillong’s hill-station colonial character
  • Nohkalikai Falls, one of India’s tallest waterfalls
  • Limestone caves around Cherrapunji

When to go

Best time to visit

October to April for drier, clearer weather — the best window to actually see waterfalls and root bridges without monsoon flooding. June-September is the monsoon proper, when Cherrapunji lives up to its "wettest place" reputation; waterfalls are at their most dramatic but travel can be disrupted.

Practical

Travel tips

Reaching the living root bridges (particularly the famous double-decker bridge near Nongriat) involves a genuine multi-hour steep hike/descent — go prepared with proper footwear and fitness expectations. Shillong and Cherrapunji roads can be affected by heavy rain in monsoon.

Eating

Food guide

Khasi cuisine centres on rice and pork, often smoked, alongside jadoh (a rice-and-meat dish) — distinctly different from mainland Indian food traditions.

Questions

Meghalaya: common questions

The trek to Nongriat’s double-decker root bridge involves roughly 3,500-4,000 steps round trip and is genuinely strenuous — reasonable fitness is required, though it’s achievable for most healthy adults at a slow pace.
