Overview
Himachal Pradesh, in brief
Himachal Pradesh is India’s most accessible Himalayan escape — a state of pine-forested hill stations, apple orchards and snow passes that has drawn honeymooners, families and backpackers since the British made Shimla their summer capital. From Shimla’s colonial Mall Road to Manali’s adventure-sports base-camp energy, Himachal packs a remarkable range of Himalayan experience into a state that’s a comfortable overnight drive from Delhi.
This is our second destination hub — not yet built to Rajasthan’s full depth, but already covering the two towns that account for most Himachal search demand: Shimla and Manali.
- Shimla’s colonial Mall Road and UNESCO-listed toy train
- Manali’s adventure-sports base camp, from paragliding to river rafting
- Snow-line views along Rohtang Pass and Solang Valley
- Apple orchards and pine forests through the Kullu Valley

When to go
Best time to visit
March to June is peak season for pleasant hill-station weather and blooming orchards. December to February draws snow-seekers to Manali and Shimla, though some high passes close. Monsoon (July-September) brings landslide risk on mountain roads and is best avoided.
Practical
Travel tips
Mountain roads mean longer travel times than distances suggest — budget extra time between towns. Book Rohtang Pass permits ahead during peak season, and pack real layers even in summer, since evenings stay cool.
Eating
Food guide
Try Himachali dham (a festive lentil-and-mountain-vegetable thali), siddu (steamed wheat buns), and trout fresh from the Kullu Valley’s rivers.
