Overview

Tamil Nadu, in brief

Tamil Nadu pairs two very different travel experiences under one state: colossal, still-active Dravidian temple complexes with towering carved gopurams, and the cool, tea-and-eucalyptus hill stations of the Nilgiris, a legacy of British colonial hill retreats.

Ooty and Madurai anchor our current hub — the Nilgiris’ best-known hill station and Tamil Nadu’s great living temple city.

  • Madurai’s Meenakshi Amman Temple, one of India’s largest active temple complexes
  • Ooty’s tea gardens and colonial-era Nilgiri Mountain Railway
  • Botanical Gardens and Ooty Lake boating
  • South India’s distinct Dravidian temple architecture

When to go

Best time to visit

October to March for comfortable temperatures across both the plains (Madurai) and hills (Ooty). April-June is very hot in Madurai, though Ooty stays pleasantly cool and is peak hill-station season for exactly that reason.

Practical

Travel tips

Dress modestly and be prepared to remove footwear at temple complexes — Meenakshi Amman Temple in particular has specific dress-code enforcement. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (a UNESCO World Heritage toy train) sells out in peak season — book well ahead.

Eating

Food guide

Tamil cuisine is one of India’s great vegetarian traditions — try a full banana-leaf meal, Madurai’s famous jigarthanda (a cooling milk-based dessert drink), and filter coffee.
