Overview

Karnataka, in brief

Karnataka pairs two of South India’s most distinct landscapes: Hampi’s UNESCO-listed ruins of the Vijayanagara Empire, scattered across a surreal boulder-strewn landscape, and Coorg (Kodagu), a Western Ghats hill region of coffee and spice plantations often called the "Scotland of India."

Coorg and Hampi anchor our current Karnataka hub, covering the state’s best-loved nature retreat and its most important historical ruins.

  • Coorg’s coffee and spice plantation stays
  • Abbey Falls and Coorg’s misty hills
  • Hampi’s surreal granite-boulder landscape

When to go

Best time to visit

October to March for comfortable weather at both destinations. Coorg stays green and pleasant into the early monsoon (June-July), which is actually a popular season there for the mist and waterfalls, though Hampi’s ruins are best visited in cooler, drier months.

Practical

Travel tips

Hampi’s ruins are spread over a wide area with minimal shade — start sightseeing early to avoid the midday heat, and carry water. Coorg’s homestays and plantation stays often book out around Indian public holidays — reserve ahead for those dates.

Eating

Food guide

Coorg’s Kodava cuisine centres on pandi curry (a distinctive pork dish) and akki roti (rice flatbread); Karnataka’s coastal and Mysore-style cuisine elsewhere in the state includes bisi bele bath and Mysore pak.

Questions

Karnataka: common questions

Two full days covers the main temple and royal-enclosure ruins comfortably; history enthusiasts may want a third for the more remote sites across the river.
