Jodhpur sightseeing: a one-day plan and how to arrange it

Jodhpur's main sights are close enough to see in a day if you pace it well. Here is an order that avoids the heat and the crowds, and how we arrange a guide and car around it.

One day

A Jodhpur sightseeing day, hour by hour

Times are a guide. Opening days and hours change, so check each place before you go.

  1. Mehrangarh Fort

Start here while it is cooler and quieter. The fort stands on a rock above the old city and was founded in the 15th century; the museum rooms and the ramparts, with a view over the blue-painted houses, take most visitors two to three hours.

  2. Jaswant Thada

A white marble memorial a few minutes from the fort, built at the end of the 19th century. It is a short, calm stop with good views back towards Mehrangarh.

  3. Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park

A restored area of volcanic rock and native desert plants beside the fort. Good for a short walk if you have energy; skip it if the day is hot and go straight to lunch.

  4. Umaid Bhawan Palace

Completed in the 1940s, part of the palace is a hotel and part is a museum open to visitors. Check the museum hours before you go, because they can change.

  5. Mandore Gardens

The former capital of the Marwar region, a short drive north of the city, with memorials, temples and shaded gardens. It is a quieter way to end the sightseeing.

  6. Clock Tower and Sardar Market

The old-city market around the Ghanta Ghar is the place for spices, textiles and snacks, and an easy walk into the blue lanes beneath the fort.

For tickets and opening hours at the fort, use the official Mehrangarh Museum Trust website.

Longer or shorter

Half-day and two-day versions

Half day

Mehrangarh Fort, Jaswant Thada and a walk through the old city. This is the version most visitors choose when Jodhpur is a stop between two longer drives.

Two days

Spread the one-day plan over a slower pace and add a half-day trip outside the city, such as the desert and village safari towards Osian.

How we arrange it

A guide and car for your Jodhpur sightseeing

We can arrange a private vehicle and a local guide for the day. Send us the date, the number of people and anything you want to include or skip, and we reply with a plan and a price in writing. If you only need the vehicle, see our taxi and car with driver in Jodhpur page. If Jodhpur is part of a longer trip, our Jodhpur tour packages show how the city fits into each route.

  • Entry tickets and meals are usually paid separately; your quote says what is included.
  • Dress modestly at temples and memorials, and carry water and sun protection.
  • Wear shoes you can take off easily; some sites ask visitors to remove them.

Questions

Jodhpur sightseeing: common questions

One day covers the main sights if you start early: Mehrangarh Fort, Jaswant Thada, the old city and one of Umaid Bhawan Palace or Mandore. A second day lets you add the other and a half-day trip, such as Osian or a Bishnoi village visit.

Early morning, soon after it opens, is usually the most comfortable: the heat is lower and the crowds are thinner. Check the opening hours and ticket details on the official Mehrangarh Museum Trust website before you go.
