When Shahjehan decided to relocate the Mughal capital from Agra to Delhi, he commissioned a spanking new, well planned city opposite the historic Lal Qila, where his own palace was located. Shahajehanbad the Mughal’s imperial capital was built in 1648, along the lines of elegant Persian city of Isfahan. At the time of its construction in the 17th Century, it was arguably, the most prosperous and beautiful city in the world.
